Sausage Biscuit

Sausage Biscuit

3/4 pound of hot ground pork sausage
2 2/3 cups of flour
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1/2 teaspoon of soda
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/2 cup of shortening
1 package of dry yeast
1/4 cup of warm water
1 cup of buttermilk
melted butter or margarine

Cook the sausage in a heavy pan until browned and broken into small pieces. Place on paper towel to drain. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt in large bowl. Cut in shortening until like coarse meal. Dissolve yeast in water, let stand about 5 minutes. Combine the yeast and buttermilk, stirring well. Add to the flour mixture and stir until moistened. Add sausage and knead into dough. Place dough on lightly floured board and knead lightly several times to get sausage mixed throughout. Roll to about 1/2 inch thickness. Cut and place on ungreased pan. Brush top with melted margarine. Bake in a 425ºF. oven about 10 minutes or until light brown. Biscuits can be frozen before baking. Remove from freezer when needed, baked while still frozen 425ºF. for 10 minutes.
