Lane Cake

Cake:
1 cup of butter or margarine
2 cups of sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla
3 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder
1 cup of milk
8 egg whites
White Fluffy Frosting:
1 cup of sugar
1/3 cup of water
a dash of cream of tartar
a dash of salt
 2 egg whites
1 teaspoon of vanilla


Filling:
8 egg yolks
1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of  butter or margarine
1 cup of chopped nuts
1 cup of raisins
1/2 cup of Maraschino cherries, cut
1 cup of coconut
1/4 - 13 cup of wine, bourbon or liqueur


Cake: Cream butter and sugar until light and smooth, add vanilla. Sift flour and baking powder together. Add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beating well after each addition. Fold in egg whites. Pour into 3 greased and floured 9 inch pans and bake at 350ºF. for 20 - 25 minutes or until done.. Cool in pans for 202 minutes,  remove from pans, and cool completely.
Filling: Combine the yolks, sugar, and butter in saucepan over low heat. Stir over low heat until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and add remaining ingredients. Cool to room temperature. Spread on tops of layers only.
frosting: In sauce pan combine sugar, water, cream of tartar and salt. Bring to a boil. Beat egg whites and slowly add syrup. Add vanilla. Beat about 7 minutes until peaks form. Spread around side of cake.
